Childhood Inspirations?

Postby rainbowsheeps on Sun Aug 10, 2008 5:18 am

Simple: what inspired you as a kid? Movies, action figures, books, music, comics, anything that fed your imagination.

TV Shows/Movies/Comics/Action figures:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Power Rangers
He-Man
Batman: The Animated Series
Spiderman
Superman
X-Men
Biker Mice from Mars
Transformers
Thundercats
Voltron
Scooby-Doo
Ghostbusters
Gargoyles
Pinky & The Brain
Animaniacs
The Tick

Video games:
Sonic the Hedhehog
Mario & Luigi

Movies:
The Secret of Nimh
All Dogs Go to Heaven
Other Don Bluth stuff
Robin Hood (Disney)
The Sword and the Stone (Disney)

Books:
Where The Wild Things Are
The Lion, The Witch, & the Wardrobe

I think it will be interesting to see the influences on the different generations (I, for instance, was born in the late 80's.) Also, how much of an affect do you think these things helped your childhood imagination, and how much that imagination is still with you today, or how much it helps your writing ability? It's interesting to me to delve into the childhood and think about that sort of thing. And wonder if there's an effect on kids today from media having less focus on quality kids entertainment. (The Disney Direct-to-Video sequels, for instance.)

This is one of my favorite cartoons as a kid: The Secret of Nimh. Lots of talking mice and birds. Essentially it's about one woman rat, Mrs. Bisby, who's trying to find a cure for her sick son. It leads her to a colony of rats in the middle of a heated political battle that leads to a war of sorts.

I haven't seen it in a few years, but it's a pretty good dark kid's movie. Not quite on the level of any of Pixar's stuff, but entertaining nonetheless. And free!
