Writer's Block

Postby rainbowsheeps on Thu Jun 26, 2008 3:28 am

What do you guys have to say about it? What do you do to treat it, etc?

I just suffered from it earlier today. I'm working on this book, and actually after writing that short, Rosaline, I couldn't write anything afterwards. I guess I'm just honestly not very happy with the short, and I have a tendency to have trouble getting back into writing when I feel less than stellar about what I've written last.

write anyway. if you dont write you get rusty, and you'll be even more pissed off and disappointed with what you produce next. to quote stephen graham jones, there is no (good or) bad writing until it is compared to the finished product. until then it's all just writing.

Yeah, I actually got over it earlier. I do free writing stuff when I get stuck, just the usual type whatever comes to mind without editing yourself, write "stuck" when you get stuck, over and over, forcing your mind to think of something new to write. Usually helps.

Did a whole chapter of the book like this. It helps it's only a paragraph long.

my cousin who is occasionally brilliant, but usually just an egotist, once told me when i was stuck, or picking something up again to describe the scene, or the environment. something totally off plot, just to get back into the world i was creating. i still do this when im coming into something cold, or starting a first draft.

I don't write when I'm stuck; I just come back to it later when I feel like I have something to say. It helps having an outline first, cuz you could stay productive by just jumping to another part of the story more conducive to your mood.

A common piece of advice is to do some task that uses a different part of your brain, exercise or cleaning or math homework or whatever. Removing yourself from your "element" is often a spur to creativity or approaching a problem from a new direction.

Yeah, that's good advice too. I do that, exercise every night around 11 PM and then look at outlines and start writing at about midnight. If I can't write, just watch a movie or listen to music then go back to it around 3. Usually is when I get my best writing done.
